Approaching the Throne of Grace

May 17th, Year of Grace 2020

Dear Bible Friends,

What is the essential, vital thing to be doing at this present time? I believe it is to approach the throne of Grace, with our Mother Mary, to pray for our Church, our people, our nation, our world – for their healing.

Read: 2 Chronicles 7:12-14

We have this precious promise: “When I send pestilence among my people, if my people, who are called by my name humble themselves (fast), pray, seek my face, and turn away from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Let’s pray for the healing of our land at this perilous time.

Pray secondly, using the Novena to the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit to come down upon us and upon our people, as in the days of Elijah, and as the time of the first Pentecost in Jerusalem.

Read: 1 Kings 18:20-40

At a time of great apostasy in Israel when most people were turning away from the Living God and towards the nature god, Baal, Elijah prayed and called down fire from Heaven upon the evening sacrifice: “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. Let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your bidding. Answer me, oh Lord, answer me, so that this people may know that you, oh Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.” Then the fire fell –and when the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord is indeed God”. Do we not long for the same response today from our people, so let’s pray for the fire to fall on His people.

Thirdly, let’s pray for the Holy Spirit to fall upon us so that, as at the First Pentecost in Jerusalem, we, like Peter and the Apostles might be prophets speaking God’s word to our people.

Read: Acts 2: 1-4 and 14-22

We have this promise, when the Spirit falls afresh upon, we ordinary people will prophesy – speak God’s word to our families, friends, acquaintances (see verse 18 above), because we too are living in a time of apostasy – a great turning away from God and our Church. This time of COVID-19 is a great opportunity from God to give hope and purpose to those who feel lost, bewildered and frightened; but we need the power and the confidence to proclaim it – the power of the Holy Spirit. So, let’s join together in humble, fervent prayer which is very effective (James 5:16).
